Best way to go about this is by using DMUpdater. This app will root your phone, and allow you to apply the DroidMod ROM while keeping a full backup of the stock version of your software. You can easily switch between DroidMod and stock 2.0.1/2.1 in a matter of minutes.

Just save it to your computer, place it on your SD card, and use a file manager like Astro to install it on your phone.
